HUGE ASTEROID TO PAST EARTH ON JULY 3RD 2006

An asteroid possibly as large as a half-mile or more in diameter is rapidly approaching the Earth.  There is no need for concern, for no collision is in the offing, but the space rock will make an exceptionally close approach to our planet early on Monday, July 3, passing just beyond the Moon’s average distance from Earth.

Astronomers will attempt to get a more accurate assessment of the asteroid’s size by “pinging” it with radar.

And skywatchers with good telescopes and some experience just might be able to get a glimpse of this cosmic rock as it streaks rapidly past our planet in the wee hours Monday. The closest approach occurs late Sunday for U.S. West Coast skywatchers.

The asteroid, designated 2004 XP14, was discovered on Dec. 10, 2004 by the Lincoln Laboratory Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR), a continuing camera survey to keep watch for asteroids that may pass uncomfortably close to Earth.

Although initially there were concerns that this asteroid might possibly impact Earth later this century and thus merit special monitoring, further analysis of its orbit has since ruled out any such collision, at least in the foreseeable future.

Mad Science Experiment - 'The Magic Can'

The pushing force of air is called air pressure. The closer you are to Earth, the greater the air pressure. The farther away from Earth (in other words the higher your altitude), the less the air pressure. And remember, pressure is coming from all around us.

  1. 1 -Take the coffee can and punch 3 small holes in the bottom. Also punch one hold in the plastic lid.
  2. 2 - Now fill the coffee about 1/2 full of water and put the lid on.
  3. 3 - Place your hand over the hole and press down on the lid. Notice how the water streams out of the holes on the bottom due to the pressure you are exerting on the lid.
  4. 4 - Now slowly stop applying pressure to the lid. Notice how the stream of water stops. You can stop and start the flow of water simply by removing you finger from the hole. (Now would be a good time to hand the can to one of your parents...)

When you filled the can only half full, you left some space empty. This space actually was not empty - it was filled with air. Pressure on the lid exerted pressure on this air which in turn exerted pressure on the water forcing it out of the can. When you stop pressing on the lid, and leave your finger over the hole, the pressure of the air outside the can holds the water up from the bottom.

Words That Only The Army Would Use

I have decided we should try something different this month, hence the army jargon. These are just some of the strange words that they use in everyday combat.

96 Uniform - A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) pilot

Army Brat - Child of an individual that serves or has served in the Army. Generally used when explaining why someone has live where they have lived.

Non-Kinetic Technologies - An interesting term for lasers, microwaves and sound blasts that do not rely on actual projectiles to do their work.

Queen of Battles - Artillery.

Sapper - A minesweeper, or one who goes and finds land mines.

Calling in the Pickets - Concentrating one's forces into a single group for decisive action. This is also known as "Bringing in the Pickets".

QRF - Quick Reaction Force, a highly mobile and heavily armed response team.

Weird News - "Customer glued to the toilet seat"

BOULDER, Colo. - Home Depot was sued by a shopper who claims he got stuck to a restroom toilet seat because a prankster had smeared it with glue.

Bob Dougherty, 57, accused employees of ignoring his cries for help for about 15 minutes because they thought he was kidding.

“They left me there, going through all that stress,” Dougherty told The (Boulder) Daily Camera. “They just let me rot.”

Very few friends I have, renowned am not,
Concealed and shielded behind much, difficult to spot.
I am like bug and sickness; I am contagious not always wanted,
Though I am small, they fear me greatly, for I might leave them haunted.
At times I am tough to keep, my master forced to let me free,

I am like a bird; I want to be free creature.
What am I?

They will never find me here.
What am I?
